The Kuleana Academy is designed to educate and train grassroots leaders who have a desire to serve in public office, as community organizers, or on Hawai`i’s Boards and Commissions. The program provides participants a well-rounded introduction to critical social, economic and environmental issues in Hawai‘i, as well as in-depth leadership development training and the ins-and-outs of campaigning.

Participants will be evaluated and selected via a process that includes a panel made of HAPA Board Members and Kuleana Academy Alliance Education Partners. There is a minimum goal of identifying, recruiting and training 3 emerging leaders from each county: Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i.

More information can be found here: http://www.hapahi.org/kuleana-academy

The dates of the program are
KA Weekend 1 – July 13/14

KA Weekend 2 – August 24/25

KA Weekend 3 – Sept 7/8

KA Weekend 4 – Oct 12/13

KA Weekend 5 – Nov 2/3

KA Weekend 6 – Nov 23/24

Full participation in the program is critical. We ask that participants can commit to all 6 weekends. Minimum participation is 5 weekends/10 days. Participants are expected to be in attendance all weekend, from 9 AM to 8 PM on Saturday and 9 AM to 5 PM on Sunday. The Neighbor Island participants may be required to travel on a Friday night before each session or on the first flight out Saturday morning of each session. Travel expenses and transportation is provided. Light breakfast and lunch is offered both days. Dinner is provided on Saturday.

Only two years after launching Kuleana Academy candidates’ training program, we’ve graduated a total of 50 community-rooted leaders! Five of them were elected to public office in the 2018 mid-term election. Another five were elected to their respective Neighborhood Boards on O`ahu. Others are leading campaigns in their own backyards. One shining example of this grassroots leadership is our Community Organizer, Tiare Lawrence, a graduate of the inaugural Kuleana Academy program. We have also launched a Kuleana Academy Fellowship program, for graduates of KA, based off of the amazing work she has been doing on behalf of HAPA over the past 2 years.

Applications are open until April 15. If you have any questions, please let me know.
