WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?
Good Pitch convenes filmmakers with change makers around urgent issues to catalyze coalitions and create campaigns for social good. An initiative of Doc Society, in partnership with Ford Foundation, Sundance Institute, and others, Good Pitch national events have raised more than $30 million for film impact campaigns, hosting 40 events in 15 countries since 2007.
WHAT IS GOOD PITCH LOCAL?
Launched in 2017 to help bridge local divides, Good Pitch Local is a day-long pitching and networking event showcasing new media projects and presenting opportunities for organizers to connect with media makers in their communities in a model of dynamic collaboration. Events have been held to-date in Detroit, Dallas, Durham, Miami, and Philadelphia ~ and Good Pitch Local Hawaiʻi is up next!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Good Pitch Local is unique in that it offers a platform for pitches in both directions – it’s not only the filmmakers who get the spotlight, but also activists and organizers who can envision film and media as an aid to achieving their missions for impact and social change.
Potential participants submit project ideas in advance. Up to 16 projects are selected and trained to pitch in front of a carefully curated mix of 150 people who are invited to attend. An equal number of media makers, community activists and organizations pitch their latest projects and most passionate ideas in an expertly moderated program of three-minute pitches and audience engagement to elicit support. In between, a mix of national and local experts present case studies and good ideas to keep the spirit of collaboration flowing. The event is free and by invitation only.
WHO PITCHES?
Media makers with new projects that are deeply relevant to their community, and community leaders who are advancing social justice, equity and social good. Projects range from short and long-form doc and narrative films to multi-platform investigative journalism, gaming, podcasts and virtual reality.
WHO ATTENDS?
Activists, Educators, Entrepreneurs, Filmmakers, Foundations, Nonprofits, Lawyers, Media makers, Media Platforms, Philanthropists, Policymakers, Press and more.
WHAT IS PLEDGED?
Good Pitch filmmakers and participants think beyond traditional funding and distribution models to design and partner on impact campaigns to change hearts and minds, influence policy, or push bold, local solutions to persistent problems.
Good Pitch Local Hawaiʻi participants will have the opportunity to pitch in hopes of garnering: Financial Resources often in the form of micro-grants of $500 – $2,500 and more; Access to additional resources that support production, distribution and outreach; Partnerships that strengthen campaigns and movements; Time & Expertise along with individuals’ skills and labor.

WHAT ELSE COULD IT LEAD TO?
In addition to local collaboration and impact, the Good Pitch Local program will bring new ways of seeing, understanding, and supporting projects in Hawai’i to the attention of participants from national and international funders, distributors, media, campaign organizations, and investors, including Ford and Wyncote Foundations, Sundance Institute, Netflix, PBS, Kickstarter, and others. It will also put several Hawaiʻi projects in position to be selected for Good Pitch Pasifika, a regional initiative to amplify Pacific voices and stories at a major event set for Auckland, NZ in 2020.
