Applications Open: ACLU Hawaii Tom Humphreys and Allan Wang Civil Rights Fund @ https://acluhi.org/THAWCRF/
Nov 18 all-day

https://acluhi.org/THAWCRF/

The application deadline for this grant is November 20, 2019.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i Foundation (ACLU of Hawai‘i) is excited to announce the creation of The Tom Humphreys and Allan Wang Civil Rights Fund. The fund will provide financial support to two bright local students with innovative, creative project proposals aimed at furthering the civil rights and civil liberties of LGBTQ+ people in Hawai‘i. The application deadline for this grant is November 20, 2019.

While the LGBTQ+ community has seen significant progress in the access to and attainment of their civil liberties and civil rights, we know there is still a long road to equality. Local civil rights activists and key supporters for the ACLU of Hawai‘i, Allan Wang and the late Tom Humphreys, were instrumental in the legalization of same-sex marriage and knew this firsthand. With their generous support, the ACLU of Hawai‘i is excited to help empower students who strive to make a difference in their community.

The fund will grant two cash gifts of $3,900 to two local students—one in high school aged 16 to 18 and another in college or graduate school aged 19 to 24—meant to be used toward a proposed project idea that can be categorized in one of four categories: advocacy, arts, education/journalism, and technology. Teams of students can enter but one student will act as primary contact and awardee.

We’re looking for students who are able to show work, volunteer or educational experience in the past exhibiting a dedication to civil rights. They should be willing to assist with public education and support communications around the grant and their project, as well as allow their name and likeness to be used by ACLU of Hawai‘i promotions.

A judging committee curated by the ACLU of Hawai‘i will choose the awardees. Selected awardees will be notified in early December and announced shortly afterward.

5B is the inspirational story of everyday heroes who took extraordinary action to comfort, protect and care for the patients of the first HIV/AIDS ward unit in the United States at San Francisco General Hospital.

5B is stirringly told through first-person testimony of the nurses and caregivers who built Ward 5B in 1983, their patients, loved ones, and staff who volunteered to create care practices based in humanity and holistic well-being during a time of great uncertainty.

The result is an uplifting yet candid and bittersweet monument to a pivotal moment in American history and a celebration of quiet heroes’ worthy of renewed recognition.

Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to HIV Care Services at the Hawai’i Health & Harm Reduction Center.
